How to Take Care of Your Sunglasses

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

You should care for your sunglasses like you would any other accessory or piece of jewelry. With some careful handling and maintenance these sunny-day staples can last you through many seasons.

Follow these fool-proof tips to keep your shades in tiptop shape:

  • Always use your eyewear case!  This will avoid frames being sat on, stepped on, or getting damaged from tossing around loosely in your purse. There are great fashionable and trendy options available now so there is no excuse not to accessorize with a case to match not only your eyewear, but even your outfit!
  • Don’t use tissues, toilet paper or especially your clothes to clean your lenses.  This is like machine-washing your dry-clean only!  To avoid scratching your lenses, use a microfiber cleaning cloth and/or cleaning solution.  It’s also important to rinse your lenses when cleaning them. If there is any sand or grit that isn’t rinsed off you could end up rubbing it on the lens and creating scratches.
  • Never leave your glasses on the dashboard of your car.  Excessive heat and cold can cause them to warp. And again, make sure to keep them in their case!
  • Although we all love to do it, using sunglasses as a headband can cause them to scratch and lose their shape.
  • Always have a professional readjust your frames.  If you try to adjust the temples or the nosepiece and don’t really know what you are doing, you could easily cause them to break.
  • If your sunglasses and eyeglasses get oily from a day at the beach, clean them with warm water and a clear dishwashing liquid like Dawn, etc. (just nothing with cream in it).  This cuts grease on your lenses as well as your dishes!

Do You Have The Look To Get The Job?

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Prepping for a killer interview this week? Chances are you’re studying the company’s website, conjuring up challenging questions and practicing your most intellectual, finely tuned responses as to why you deserve this job. Think that your reputable education, impeccable manners and relatable experiences will be the swaying factors determining your fate? Guess again.

The Daily Mail reports that a study conducted by the British College of Optometrists suggests job seekers who don glasses are more likely to find work.

Here are the facts:

  • 1/3 of Brits think a person looks more professional in specs
  • 43% believe that the bespectacled are more intelligent
  • 40% would consider wearing glasses—even if they don’t need them—to try and land a job

Adding more fuel to the fire, relationship expert and author of Solemate, Lauren Mackler, says “When we see someone wearing glasses, we assume that they are quiet, intelligent and don’t cause problems. And this is important in a job interview since those first few seconds can be a real deal breaker if an employer doesn’t like your appearance.”

While we’re not suggesting that you bypass the traditional interview blueprint completely, we do think that spending more time picking out sophisticated Eyewear could make a difference in that ever important first impression.

Shopping for your New Glasses?

Saturday, March 26th, 2011

When shopping for glasses you will find that the options are endless and while that’s exciting it can also be overwhelming. Stay ahead of the game by knowing exactly what works best for you. There are a few key things to research and keep in mind when it comes to shopping for specs:

Lifestyle Lenses: Lenses are important and offer frame wearers a range of options. Different lens materials and treatments can help to optimize your vision. For instance, if you spend long hours at the computer, ask about lenses that will ease your eyes while doing so. On the road? Get lenses that help with driving. Talk to the salesperson or your optician about your lifestyle and find the lens that works best for you. Also, be sure to ask about anti-reflective lenses, which eliminate lens glare and allow a clear view of your eyes.

Frame Fit: Comfort is crucial when it comes to finding the right pair of glasses. After a custom adjustment by a professional frames should sit on the bridge of your nose without sliding down and temples should rest securely behind your ears. If you don’t want to constantly be fidgeting with your frames, be sure to ask an optician to ensure a perfect fit.

Face Shape: The rule of thumb when choosing eyewear is to contrast frame shape with face shape. If you have a round face, choose angular frames and if you have an angular face, choose rounded frames.  No matter the face shape, always remember to keep the eyewear proportionate to your face and eyes centered in the frames.

Personal Style: From the runway to the red carpet, there are plenty of eyewear trends to choose from each season. Whether you’re into bling or logos, neutrals or neons, vintage or modern there’s something for everyone. It all depends on what fits your personality and your wardrobe, so investigate multiple options.

Remember there’s a perfect pair for everyone and every occasion so no matter what your needs are you can find a pair that works for you. To find eyeglasses that suit your style shop ContactsandSpecs.com

Elizabeth Taylor Dead at 79

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

Elizabeth Taylor died at 1:28 AM at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles … where she had been hospitalized for the past couple of weeks.  A private funeral will be held later this week.

Taylor’s publicist says she was “surrounded by her children — Michael Wilding, Christopher Wilding, Liza Todd, and Maria Burton.”

Taylor’s rep says the actress died “peacefully” from congestive heart failure, “a condition with which she had struggled with for many years.” The rep adds, “Though she had recently suffered a number of complications, her condition had stabilized and it was hoped that she would be able to return home.  Sadly, this was not to be.”

Someone at the hospital Tuesday night tells TMZ … doctors knew at around 6 PM that Taylor was dying.

Taylor was considered one of the greatest actresses of all-time — starring in classics like “Cleopatra” and “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” She won an Academy Award for best actress twice for her roles in “BUtterfield 8” and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”.

Taylor, who was married 8 times — twice to Richard Burton – is survived by 4 children, 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Taylor’s son, Michael, says, “My mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor, and love.”  Michael goes on to tout his mom’s “brave and relentless advocacy in the fight against HIV/AIDS … We know, quite simply, that the world is a better place for Mom having lived in it.”

Elton John says, “We have just lost a Hollywood giant; more importantly, we have lost an incredible human being.”

Dr. Arnold Klein, Taylor’s longtime friend and doctor, tells TMZ, “She’s the greatest human being I’ve ever known.  She used her celebrity not just for fame but to change the world.  Elizabeth gave AIDS a face and that’s when people started accepting it as a disease.”

We’ve learned Taylor has a plot next to her parents at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in L.A.  Among those who are buried or interred there — Marilyn Monroe, Natalie Wood, Truman Capote, Farrah Fawcett, Dean Martin and Walter Matthau.
